A recent study published in the Lancet compared the harm caused by various drugs, legal and illegal, to the user and society. The results:

Adult children of alcoholics have long suspected as much based on our experience; the scientific corroboration is welcome. Expect drug czars and the like to pooh-pooh the findings, not to mention the alcohol industry and its apologists.
